Tofutown Wiesbaum, September 2007
There are a whole lot of streets and alleys that have to do with butchers, meat and animal produce. In Cologne there’s the “Fleischmengergasse” (“Butcher Alley”), in London there’s Butcher Row. There are Butcher Streets and Livestock Lanes, Lübeck has its “Fleischhauer Straße“ (literally “Meat Beater Street” – ouch!), in Alkmaar there’s the Kaasmarkt, Zittau and Wroclaw both have a “Wurstgasse” (“Sausage Alley”), Brussels has a Rue des Bouchers und so on und so forth. And who doesn’t know about our Milky Way, now badly in need of renovation because the planet Earth has such a bad case of pest infestation that it’s in danger of falling apart at the seams.
But now help is at hand and all will be well. Hardly 30 years after Germany’s first tofu makers first turned up and began committing their seditious acts, for which they were of course immediately arrested, there is now the world’s first Tofu Street, in 54578 Wiesbaum, Germany.
To be honest, we’re so proud of ourselves that we can hardly get our heads through the doorway. And the very best thing is: tofu is even spelled absolutely correctly (In the 80s neither the Bavarian Supreme Minister for Meat Lobbyists, Ignatz Kiechle, nor his civil cervelats – sorry, servants – could spell tofu properly. They kept banning torfu, tufu, tufo, tortuffo, tofo and so on).
FAQ:
Is Tofutown Wiesbaum actually the official name, too?
Informally, yes!
Are there other renamings planned?
We are currently working on the Bundesland Rhineland-Palatinate (“Palatinate”, as in “palate”, is of course already a good head start). We are going to take advantage of the fact that our Minister-President is busy saving the Social Democrats in Berlin and the local Christian Democrats are an inch away from hara-kiri, so there’s hardly anyone to stop us.
While we’re at it we’re also applying to have Franz Josef Strauß Airport in Munich renamed as “Flying Tofus over Bavaria” Airport.
Which brands are made in Tofu Street?
Viana, VianaSound, Soyatoo!, Demeter Soya Alive and Friends and several private labels.
