(*to be precise, Stiftung Warentest magazine, issue 9/2010, pages 20 - 23)

Products made by Tofutown are free of genetically modified organisms, as tests published by the German consumer organisation Stiftung Warentest in the September 2010 issue of its monthly magazine show - for example “Viana Veggie Wiener Schnitzel” or private label products such as “Granovita Flanzenfleisch Schnitzel” or “Veggie Life Chick'n Nuggets - 8 crispy coated vegetarian nuggets”.

A total of twelve vegetarian products from different producers were tested, of which eight were found to be sound. Four products, however, contained traces of Round UP Ready from Monsanto, including two brands sold in health food stores.

Organic soybeans, just like conventional soybeans, are used mostly for animal feed. Tofu, soy milk or other products that can be directly and more ecologically consumed by humans unfortunately do not play a major part in worldwide soy cultivation (even in organic farming). Genetically modified animal feed can not yet proven in animal products such as meat, milk, cheese etc., which is why the cultivation of genetically modified strains is rising so strongly.

Tofutown expends great effort investigating all processing steps and the final product for traces of genetic modification.

Tofu fact no. 4: High dioxin levels in animal products such as eggs, meat, dairy products or fish repeatedly make headlines. Unfortunately, animals' bodies accumulate toxins almost like vacuum cleaners, since they need large amounts of plant fodder for growth and metabolism. Thus a lot of vegetable matter ends up as a small amount of meat or milk. 100% vegetarian foodstuffs, however, reach us humans without any detours and are therefore not only more ecological, but also generally much less contaminated. Which means good prospects for soy milk, tofu, veggie kebabs & co.
